Ladders, stairs, planks, easily graspable handrails, and sturdy guardrails not only improve safety but allow workers to climb to needed heights and get into tight spaces, such as boilers or complex refinery installations where pipes or obstructions prevent usage of large pieces of scaffolding.

The most appropriate access and egress scaffolding tools for a job site depend on a variety of factors, including site conditions, health and safety requirements, and geographic location. For example, stair towers are recommended to create seamless access and egress when erecting scaffolds above 30 feet. Likewise, ladders are a good choice for small scaffolds, tower scaffolds, and job sites where access is limited.

Ladders can be vertical or inclined depending on the region and are a good choice if your job site requires erecting one to five lifts of scaffolds. However, a stair tower is recommended for anything above. If a stair tower is not erected, then the ladder must be regularly repositioned to meet safety regulations.
